Winter in Croatia

Zagreb is located further North than Sapporo in Hokkaido, which has very long and cold winter in general. For example, Zagreb's average temperature in January is -4 degrees in the lowest and +3.1 degrees in the highest, according to Wikipedia. On the other hand, Sapporo's average temperature in January is -7 degrees in the lowest and -0.6 degrees in the highest.

I was told that the temperature in Zagreb could drop to -20 degrees, so I was kind of scared if I can survive Croatia's winter because I've never experienced such cold temperature in my life. The place where I lived, near Nagoya, is not cold (in temperature). We usually have about 3 days of snow, that's it. But, when my husband came to Nagoya in winter, he said he felt much colder than Zagreb, because of the strong wind and moisture in the air although the temperature was not that low.

In fact, my first experience of -15 degrees was not too bad than I thought. As my husband told me, because there wasn't strong wind and the air was quite dry, I didn't felt that cold. But, it was the first time to see and touch powder snow here, so I was excited like a child :)

This year, the surrounding countries of Croatia suffered from heavy snow, but Croatia was somehow escaped such heavy snow. Interestingly, the coastal cities such as Split and Zadar had more snow than in Zagreb, which is very rare to happen.

Now, since the last week of February, it got suddenly warm here in Croatia. The temperature today (2 March) even rose to 20 degrees! That was much much warmer even than Tokyo!

For me, it is very strange that Zagreb, which is located further North than Sapporo, is quite warmer than Sapporo. But for Croats, it is strange why Sapporo, or Hokkaido in general, is so cold... It's all because the extremely cold air from Siberia, though.
